True crime has been on the rise for some time. With the rise in true crime documentaries and dramas comes a sordid fascination with the darker parts of the human mind. Netflix has been pouring its budget into crafting new and unheard crime stories as the popularity of them demands it. But now true crime is leaking into every area of our lives. Our books, the news, our films, and TV programmes, and now our podcasts too...

Do you like true crime stories and comedy too? Well, you would think horrific stories wouldn’t be funny at all, but the All Killa No Filla podcast takes a humorous-yet-tasteful view on all things true crime. So what makes it so listenable?

It’s Easy to Find.

The beauty with podcasts is that they’re really easy to access, as well as being free to listen to. Places like Spotify and the Apple Podcasts app are just two ways in which you can listen on the go, on your phone. If you don’t have a phone that can do that, then you’re missing out on a whole host of audio delights. Maybe it’s time you looked at getting an upgrade, yeah? On sites like Promo Codes For, they have a whole host of discounts from places such as Affordable Mobiles, where you can pick up the latest handset deals. However, if you prefer listening in the comfort of your own home, the site also have discounts from stores like Argos and Currys PC World so that you can utilise the very best audio tech when listening to the podcast.

The Hosts Are Brilliant.

The podcast is presented by comedians Rachel Fairburn and Kiri-Pritchard McLean, who at the start of every episode, start with this disclaimer: “This isn’t hero worship, we do this podcast because we have a mutual interest in serial killers, and as long as we are doing this podcast it stops us from writing to them in prison.” Being working comedians, they know exactly what line to toe balance the grim and gore with gut-busting humour. Mainly though, the things that happen in the stories are jumping-off points for the women to regale stories from their own life, be it growing up, their love life, or any recent goings-on. Take a look at what happened when they were interviewed on Richard Herring’s Leicester Square Theatre Podcast (RHLSTP).

They Give You Just Enough Information.

Because it’s a true clime slash comedy podcast, they aren’t too gory on all the details. They tend to focus on the reasons why someone would become a serial killer, focusing first on the killer’s early life, trying to find the reasons why they would go on to do what they did. They are also very sympathetic towards the victims, and thankfully no jokes are made at the expense of them. They take a conscientious view on every story, but still manage to find the gallows humour. Like, for example, in their episode about BTK, they lampoon him for sending a poorly-written letter to the police in a cereal box (get it, because cereal sounds like serial and he’s a killer?). Yeah, it’s not a great gag.

The Stories are Still Relevant.

In one podcast, Kiri hits upon the fact that the listenership is mainly comprised of women and gay men, and she pinpoints the fact that they are often the victims of serial killers. According to this article on Mental Floss, they say psychologists claim people like to feel prepared for any potential threats. With the podcast recently hitting the 60 episode mark, there are plenty of episodes to choose from suit your taste. So why not give All Killa No Filla a try? It might be the best thing you do this week.
